CEEM currently has 60 graduate students

As a student in the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, you will benefit from the wide variety of educational opportunities provided by a large state university.  At the same time be assured that you will receive personalized, individual attention with your academic program in our department.  As part of this personalized attention, you will be assigned an advisor to help you with your program of study and any problems you might come across.

Both programs can include a mix of course work and research, leading eventually to a thesis or dissertation. The course work provides a firm foundation in mechanics, mathematics physics and chemistry and their use in civil engineering and engineering mechanics. Student research is pursued in conjunction with a faculty thesis advisor, and can be carried out in any of the fields of active research in the Department.

The University of Arizona is ranked as a Research University I by the Carnegie Commission (its highest ranking), and ranks among the top 20 universities in the United States in external research funding. Our library ranks among the top 20 in the nation.

Because the CEEM Department involves a great number of interdisciplinary areas, it collaborates with various other Departments such as Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Mining and Geological Engineering, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Hydrology and Water Resources, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics and Optical Sciences. This environment provides excellent research opportunities toward solution of complex and modern engineering problems.
